“Have you ever seen a wolf stand next to a dog? You might think there’s not much of a different in size if you’ve never seen the two standing side by side. Granted, this depends on the breed of the dog, but typically, a wolf is about twice the size of your average dog. So what is a Mirwolf? Well, if you put a Mirwolf next to a regular wolf, you’d see the same kinda difference. A full grown wolf might weigh up to ten stone, but a Mirwolf can top out closer to twenty stone, making them larger than many people.
Mirwolves are a proud beast that roam all of the lands north of the Median Sea. They are not a common sight. They do not roam in packs; instead, it is typical to see them hunting alone. It is not uncommon to see one or two Mirwolves leading a pack of regular wolves, either. This has caused many to speculate as to how Mirwolves came about.
Like their cousin, the wolf, Mirwolves are wild beasts. They have a strong prey instinct and this makes them difficult to tame and domesticate like their distant relative, the dog. However, a trained Mirwolf is not unheard of, and several noteworthy figures around the Ring have managed to pull this off. Once trained, a Mirwolf is a very loyal friend, much like a dog, but this requires a lot of training and a lot of raw meat to accomplish.”
The Unseen
‘The Covetous’
“What does they covet, you ask? Simple. Whatever it is you’ve got that they want. Might be your wife. Could be your kid, even the clothes off your back. Whatever it is they want, they take, and once they take it, it’s theirs. You don’t get it back unless you take it back. Easier said than done most of the time.”
The Outer Ring is home to many a bandit camp and marauder tribe. Off in the East, the Covetous are among the most notorious of these groups. Led by a giant of a man called Snatch, the Covetous roam the wilds just past the City of Lanta. In fact, the Covetous might be one reason why the City of Lanta’s so populated these days — if you are caught by the Covetous out in the wild, the odds are slim that you will make it out unscathed, or even survive at all. Even those who are refused entry to the city will still camp around its walls, believing it to be far safer than the forests to the south or the badlands to the east.
The Covetous are a capable group. Their leader, Snatch, commands them with not one, but two iron fists. They have managed to secure a stable supply of gasoline and build a fortress around it. Using this resource in combination with their fleet of gas-powered motorbikes, they are able to cover great distances quickly. They often use this to surprise their victims once spotted. It is very difficult to escape from the Covetous once they’ve set their sights on you — their bikes are fast and maneuverable. For most people, your best bet is to avoid being seen in the first place.
One important thing to note about the Covetous that distinguishes them from some of the other lawless groups in the area: they are not cannibals.
‘Darters’
A distant relative of the dragonfly. These insects grow up to ten strides long and are every bit as agile and hypnotic as their cousin, even despite their size. Fortunately for the denizens of Andante, these creatures are generally not aggressive towards humans and can even be tamed and used for transportation. At low load capacity, these couriers can handily outpace a horse at full gallop — but their load capacity isn’t as much as one might hope. For this reason, these creatures are used to transport people rather than merchandise.
The Darter Taxi service is among the safest ways to get around the Ring when long distances are required. This is a modest organization servicing the Ring and beyond, even venturing as far as Lysidia or Erud. Flights are coordinated using high-powered radios operating out of each taxi hub. Most of the major cities around Andante are home to a Darter Taxi office and so it is a viable way to see most of the world, if you can afford it.
It is not uncommon for less savory individuals to covet Darters. After all, who wouldn’t want a personal transportation service at their disposal? For this reason, the taxi service typically operates using a lightweight hammock that is carried beneath the Darter. The passengers will lay be enclosed in the netting below whilst the rider sits atop the Darter. This effectively deters any sort of robbery; if the passenger were to attempt a hold-up, the driver could simply command the Darter to release the hammock and let the robber fall to their death.
‘Manserpents’
Far to the southeast of the Ring, there lies an expansive swathe of marshlands. These are commonly referred to as the Manserpent Marshes; appropriately named, as the marshlands are home to a race of vicious humanoid creatures called Manserpents. These beasts typically stand at least a head or two above your average warrior, with hardened scales. Their eyes, narrow slits set in sockets of smooth onyx or mottled amber, regard the human race with hostility. These beasts are capable of communication and live in tribal villages throughout the marshlands. In the past, they wielded only simple stone tools and weaponry, but as of late, sightings of Manserpents wielding iron weaponry and armor has been reported by the Wave Walkers from the Hidden Village of Error. This would could mean that the beasts have continued to advance, or it may mean that some other party is supplying them. In either case, the answer does not pose well for the denizens of Andante.
‘The Sea of Fire’
‘Have you ever seen seawater boil before? Head south to the Sea of Fire and you can see it for yourself. Lay your eyes on its blackened waters as they roil, concealing secret flames burning at the bottom of the sea. Nobody really knows why or when the fires started to burn, but local folklore would tell you that a massive serpent has been chained to the bottom of the sea, its breath full of fire and fury over its predicament. Perhaps this serpent is responsible for spawning the Manserpents in the marshes to the east as well.”
‘Hunter Spiders’
Hunter spiders are dangerous predators that prey upon small and medium-sized mammals, up to and including humans. These spiders can grow up to four feet long, possess eight eyes, eight legs, mandibles, and venomous fangs. They tend to operate as solo hunters and do not form groups, although multiple Hunter spiders can coexist within the same area.
These creatures generally dwell in the forests. They can climb trees effortlessly, aided by their impressive leaping ability. They are quick enough to tackle birds in flight and capable of running down wolf, deer, and humans. Their coloring makes them difficult to detect against many types of trees. These spiders do not weave webs, which also makes their presence more difficult to detect.
The denizens of Andante are aware of Hunter spiders. While they are dangerous to humans, this danger can be mitigated by traveling in groups when in the forest as they tend to focus on solitary prey.
‘Deadeyes’
The Deadeyes are a type of undead, in all cases distinguishable by their unblinking, unmoving eyes. Over time, their eyes become cloudy white. While it is rumored that these fiends are manufactured by the Beryl Witch, none know for certain. These beasts might resemble people, but they possess superhuman speed, strength, and fortitude. In fact, they can only be destroyed by removing the head, severing the spinal cord, or destroying the brain. Deadeyes are most often active at night, where it is harder to distinguish their key characteristic feature: the dead, unmoving eyes. They subsist on the flesh of living creatures.
‘The Tumultuous Plains’
“There lies our neighbor to the northwest, the Tumultuous Plains. A massive stretch of barren flats dotted by decimated ruins. Many years ago, the storms made their home with twisting castles of cloud that stretch jade green as far as the eye can see. These storms have since evicted any and all possible neighbors from their territory, save only the desperate and the mad.”
The Tumultuous Plains, stomping grounds of Mother Nature. Even as you gaze upon it from a safe distance, you can see massive shapes swaying as they meander across the plains. All of the old settlements upon the plains have been leveled by tornadoes and lightning strikes. There are those who have been curious or foolhardy enough to venture onto the plains despite the danger. Some who were lucky enough to survive have reported seeing a distant figure soaring through the dark skies with wings outstretched. The origins of this creature are a mystery to all.
‘The Rat Pack’
“The rat pack? What? Oh! You mean my little monsters. Right. Well, this is like a social experiment, but then it’s also a charity foundation. Whatever you want to call it, it’s one of those things where we all win and then we get to walk home feeling like a jar full of lightning bugs. No? OK. Bathtub full of gasoline. Still? I give up. Moving on.”
“Why do they worship a rat? Good question. I guess it was just one of those cause and effect things. The first kid I saved was lonely. One day I came back with another kid I saved, and we found the first kid hanging out with a statue of this half-human, half-rodent character, carrying on a one-sided conversation.”
“So I left the second one there with him. Over time, I sent more to join them. Before I knew it, they were worshiping some kind of ancient rat god. No name, they just call him the Rat. I suppose it’s all harmless fun, right? After all, the Rat had some pretty good rules, like ‘Thou shalt not kill,’ and… I’m pretty sure there were other ones too. Anyways, the kids seem to love him so… why not?”
The Rat Pack. A tribe of young rapscallions orphaned by the often cruel world that we live in. It’s unclear who or what led to this state of affairs, but make no mistake – this ragtag band of upstarts owns the City of Nemo. This city is known as the Orphan City in some circles, but if you were to ask any of the Rat Pack where they live, well, they probably wouldn’t tell you since you’re an adult. But that aside, they refer to their home as Nemo.
As for their moniker, well… you could probably say they’ve lost it, all things considered. The Rat Pack adhere to a cult-like religion that worships the Rat King. Nobody from outside Nemo has ever seen the Rat King, but then again, most people don’t go out of their way to visit Nemo unless they’re desperate to find a lost child. Most that do visit don’t make their way home, though. The Rat Pack are a protective group and while their small stature may not be very intimidating, they more than make up for it with their childlike creativity and fearlessness.
‘The City of Lanta’
“It was like a huge hand had come down from the sky and scooped up a giant swathe of the rubble and ruin that made up the Old World. Now, in place of that rubble stood undiscriminating concrete walls with sturdy, unfeeling facets. Flickering lookout towers dotted the top of the wall like so many fireflies shimmering in the night air. Manned by the dutiful members of the Brave Militia, each of these little aeries came equipped with its own cannon. This served as an excellent deterrent to any would-be marauders, and so Lanta was regarded as a save haven by the outside world.”
The City of Lanta, one of two free cities located on the Eastern side of the Ring. Home of the Brave Militia led by Commander Kane, Lanta offers safety and stability to those seeking to escape the hardships of the wilderness. The city’s denizens number in the tens of thousands, making it one of the most populated cities in the land.
